DVOŘÁK Piano Quintet No. 2 in A Major, Op. 81
We are enormously proud to welcome back pianist Michelle Cann. Michelle is the winner of Bay Chamber’s Andrew Wolf Award, the Eleanor Sokoloff Chair in Piano Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music, and “a compelling, sparkling virtuoso” (Boston Music Intelligencer). Michelle will be joined by the Jupiter String Quartet “an ensemble of eloquent intensity…one of the mainstays of the American chamber-music scene.” (The New Yorker)
Their gorgeous program begins with a late Mozart quartet written for the King of Prussia, a cellist. In a nod to his royal patron, Mozart awards the cellist unusual and highly effective prominence in the D Major Quartet. Dvořák’s quintet represents a spectacular and evocative fusion of Czech nationalism and the Austro-German tradition. This sublime work occupies a lofty place in the chamber music canon, the muscular drama freely intermixing with sections of pure, euphoric beauty.
